Introduction

When you think of wise intelligent animals, what do you think of? Well owls are wise and intelligent.

What is an owl?

Owls are nocturnal birds that hunt at night and sleep during the day. Owls are very intelligent animals. Owls also turn their head 270 degrees.

What do owls eat?

Owls eat frogs, insects, mice, rabbits, weasels, woodchucks, Stray Cats and bats. How many different things because of how many owl species there are. These are just some of what owls eat. Some owls even hunt fish. Owls catch prey with their talons.

Pellets

The stomach acid of an owl is pH 2.35. Which is equivalent to lemon juice or vinegar. So their stomach acid can't break down things like bones and fur. As a result owls cough up pellets.Pellets are all the bones and fur of the animals the owl ate. They can't digest things like bones and fur so they cough them up.

Popular owl types

Popular owl types are barred owls, screech owls and snowy owls. Barred owls live in cavity nests. Screech owls

live in man-made wooden birdhouses.Screech owls are a smaller type of owl so they can live in smaller nests. Snowy owls live in ground nests.

Nests

Owls live in cavity nests. This means the nest is in a cavity in something. For example a hole in a tree trunk. Barred owls live in large cavity nests. Great horned owls live in stick nests. They will take over the nests of red-tailed Hawks, great blue herons and American crows. Great horned owls are the first species of the owls season to find a nest.Great horned owl scratch the bottom of the nest to make space to lay an egg.Short-eared owls and snowy owls live in ground nests. Ground nests are nothing more than a hole in the ground to stop the owls eggs from rolling away.

Talons

Owls use their talons to catch prey. Each toe is curved with a sharp point. Owls use their talons to puncture organs in prey such as the heart. Owls also use their talons to make sure the prey does not squirm away. Owls talons are related to what the animal eats. Elf owls hunt small things so they have short talons. Snowy owls and great horned owls have large talons from hunting animals like rabbits.

Head rotation

Owls have large eyes. Owls eyes are so big that there is no room for the owl's eyes to move. But owls can see up and down and side to side. Owls 14 bones in their neck that is twice as many as humans have. Heading fourteen bones in your neck houses in villages like you can turn your head 280 degrees. They can do this without moving the rest of their body.

Conclusion

I think owls are awesome! They are wise and intelligent. Owls do smart things like use their fur as camouflage to hide from predators. Great horned owls don't even have to make a nest they use animals past nests. Overall I think owls are awesome animals!!
